Vitiligo Treatment in Brighton

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition that causes patches of skin to lose their natural pigment, resulting in well-defined white areas on the skin. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment (melanin), are damaged or no longer function properly.

Vitiligo can affect people of all ages and skin types. Although the condition is not contagious or harmful to physical health, it can have a significant impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing. At Brighton Dermatology, we provide comprehensive assessment and treatment options to help manage vitiligo.

Signs and Symptoms

Vitiligo commonly presents as:

  • Well-defined white patches on the skin
  • Areas of pigment loss that gradually enlarge
  • White patches affecting the face, hands, feet or around body openings
  • Whitening of hair within affected areas
  • Symmetrical or localised areas of pigment loss

The condition may remain stable or progress over time, and the pattern varies from person to person.

Treatment Options

Treatment aims to slow the progression of vitiligo, encourage repigmentation where possible and improve the appearance of affected skin.

At Brighton Dermatology, treatment options may include topical medications and phototherapy.

Our clinic offers:

  • A full-body Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy unit, commonly used for more widespread vitiligo.
  • A dedicated hand and foot phototherapy machine, designed to effectively treat vitiligo affecting these more difficult-to-treat areas.

Your dermatologist will determine whether phototherapy is appropriate and develop an individual treatment plan based on the extent and location of your vitiligo.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you notice new areas of pigment loss or existing patches becoming larger, early assessment by a dermatologist is recommended.

Prompt diagnosis helps confirm the condition and allows treatment to begin before further pigment loss occurs. Our dermatologists provide ongoing management and support to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes.
