Hair Problems

Hair Loss and Hair Disorders

Hair problems can be distressing for many patients and often have a significant impact on self-confidence. Hair loss or changes in hair growth can occur for a variety of reasons, and determining the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment. At Brighton Dermatology, our dermatologists diagnose and manage a wide range of hair disorders affecting both men and women.

Hair loss can develop gradually over time or occur suddenly, depending on the cause. Some people may notice thinning across the scalp, while others experience patchy hair loss or increased shedding.

Causes of Hair Loss

There are many potential causes of hair loss. One of the most common is androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male or female pattern hair loss. This condition is influenced by genetic and hormonal factors and tends to develop gradually over time.

Other causes of hair loss may include:

  • Autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata
  • Hormonal changes
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Stress or illness
  • Certain medications
  • Scalp infections or inflammatory skin conditions

Because hair loss can have multiple causes, careful assessment by a dermatologist is important.

Diagnosis and Treatment

During a consultation, the dermatologist will examine the scalp and discuss your medical history and symptoms. In some cases, additional tests may be required to identify underlying causes.

Treatment options vary depending on the diagnosis. Some conditions may respond well to topical treatments or oral medications designed to stimulate hair growth or reduce hair loss.

Other treatments focus on addressing underlying medical or nutritional issues that may be contributing to hair thinning.

At Brighton Dermatology, treatment plans are tailored to each patient to achieve the best possible outcome.

Supporting Hair Health

Early evaluation is often beneficial because some forms of hair loss respond better to treatment when addressed promptly.

If you have noticed increased hair shedding, thinning hair or patchy hair loss, a consultation with a dermatologist can help determine the cause and discuss appropriate treatment options.
