Fine Wire Diathermy for Skin Tags

Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths that commonly develop in areas where the skin rubs together, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids and groin. Although harmless, they can become irritated by clothing or jewellery and may be cosmetically bothersome.

At Brighton Dermatology, fine wire diathermy is available as an effective treatment option for removing skin tags.

Signs and Symptoms

Skin tags are typically:

  • Small, soft, flesh-coloured growths
  • Attached to the skin by a narrow stalk
  • Commonly found on the neck, eyelids, underarms and groin
  • Painless, although they may become irritated if rubbed

Most skin tags are benign and do not require treatment unless they become symptomatic or are of cosmetic concern.

Treatment Options

Fine wire diathermy is a precise procedure that uses a very fine heated wire to remove skin tags with minimal damage to the surrounding skin.

The procedure is performed in the clinic and is generally quick, with little downtime. Depending on the number and size of the skin tags, treatment may be completed in a single appointment.

Your dermatologist will assess the lesions before treatment to ensure they are suitable for removal.

When to See a Dermatologist

While skin tags are usually harmless, any new or changing skin growth should be assessed if there is uncertainty about the diagnosis.

If skin tags become irritated, catch on clothing or jewellery, or you would simply like them removed, our dermatologists can discuss whether fine wire diathermy is an appropriate treatment option.
