Excessive Perspiration

Treatment for Excessive Sweating

Excessive perspiration, also known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition in which the body produces more sweat than is necessary for normal temperature regulation. While sweating is a natural bodily function, excessive sweating can cause significant discomfort and embarrassment for many people.

Hyperhidrosis most commonly affects the underarms, palms, soles of the feet and face. For some individuals, the condition can interfere with daily activities, social interactions and professional life.

Causes of Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis may occur without an identifiable cause (primary hyperhidrosis) or be associated with certain medical conditions or medications (secondary hyperhidrosis).

Primary hyperhidrosis often begins during adolescence and tends to affect specific areas of the body such as the underarms or hands.

Because excessive sweating can have multiple causes, assessment by a dermatologist is helpful in determining the most appropriate treatment.

Treatment Options

A range of treatments is available for hyperhidrosis depending on the severity of the condition.

For mild cases, specialised antiperspirants may be effective in controlling symptoms. In more persistent cases, dermatological treatments may be recommended.

One of the most effective treatments for excessive underarm sweating is Botox injections, which temporarily block the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. This treatment has been shown to significantly reduce sweating and is covered by Medicare for certain cases of severe axillary hyperhidrosis.

Brighton Dermatology offers Botox treatment for excessive underarm sweating.

Improving Quality of Life

Excessive sweating can be distressing, but effective treatments are available that can greatly reduce symptoms and improve confidence.

If sweating is interfering with your daily life, consulting a dermatologist can help identify suitable treatment options.
