Melasma

Melasma Treatment in Brighton

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes areas of increased pigmentation, most often affecting the face. It typically appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin.

Melasma is more common in women and is frequently associated with hormonal changes, pregnancy, oral contraceptives and sun exposure. While it is not harmful, melasma can be frustrating and may affect self-confidence.

At Brighton Dermatology, our dermatologists provide personalised treatment plans to help reduce pigmentation and improve overall skin tone.

Signs and Symptoms

Melasma usually presents as:

  • Brown or grey-brown patches on the face
  • Symmetrical pigmentation on both sides of the face
  • Pigmentation that becomes darker after sun exposure
  • Gradual development over months or years

Unlike freckles or age spots, melasma often affects larger areas of skin with relatively even pigmentation.

Treatment Options

Successful treatment of melasma requires a combination of medical therapy and ongoing sun protection.

Treatment may include:

  • Prescription topical creams to reduce pigmentation
  • Medications that help regulate pigment production
  • Individualised skincare recommendations
  • Strict daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent recurrence

Because melasma can recur, long-term management is often necessary to maintain results.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you have developed persistent facial pigmentation or over-the-counter products have not been effective, a dermatologist can determine whether melasma is the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Professional assessment also helps distinguish melasma from other causes of skin pigmentation.
