Keloids

Keloid Treatment in Brighton

Keloids are raised scars that develop when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process. Unlike normal scars, keloids grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may continue to enlarge over time. They can develop after surgery, cuts, burns, acne, piercings or even minor skin injuries.

While keloids are not harmful, they can become itchy, tender or uncomfortable and may cause cosmetic concerns depending on their size and location. At Brighton Dermatology, our dermatologists provide expert assessment and personalised treatment for keloid scars to help improve symptoms and appearance.

Signs and Symptoms

Keloids may develop gradually over weeks or months after a skin injury. Common features include:

  • A raised, thickened scar that extends beyond the original wound
  • Firm, smooth or shiny skin
  • Pink, red, brown or darker pigmentation depending on skin type
  • Itching, tenderness or discomfort
  • Continued growth of the scar over time

Keloids are more common on the chest, shoulders, upper back, earlobes and jawline, although they can occur anywhere on the body.

Treatment Options

Treatment aims to reduce the size of the keloid, relieve symptoms and minimise the risk of recurrence. Because keloids can be challenging to treat, a combination of therapies is often recommended.

At Brighton Dermatology, treatment options may include:

  • Intralesional corticosteroid injections, which help reduce inflammation and flatten the scar.
  • 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) injections, which may be used alone or in combination with corticosteroids to improve treatment outcomes.
  • Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen treatment), which can help reduce the size of smaller keloids and soften scar tissue.

Your dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the size, location and characteristics of your keloid.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you have a scar that continues to grow, becomes uncomfortable or causes cosmetic concerns, it is worth having it assessed by a dermatologist.

Early treatment may help improve outcomes and reduce the progression of keloid formation. At Brighton Dermatology, our dermatologists can assess your scar and develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
